In the article ‘The Most Expensive GIF of All Time’, Michael Green created a single GIF out of repeatedly making digital images of Jeff Koons 12 foot stainless steel sculpture called “Balloon Dog”. Koon sold it in an auction for $58 million dollars, being the most expensive piece of work sold by an artist during an auction. Green then called his rendered piece “Balloon Dog Deflated” and it represents death, as in death of an old era of modern art. Green tried to make the implication of letting go of typical artistic styles and move into a more digital aspect. He posted his GIF for $2,000 and got no takers, so he reposted the listing for $5,800. The GIF is seen by millions of people daily, with the efforts to create art that is relevant to everyday life. Museums nowadays are through the internet, like Tumblr, with the effects of moving away from the concepts of a physical painting. Green gives a description of his work as he explains his use of recycled and replicated images from Koon, and how he used digital lighting and texture methods to focus on the details of the image itself. Green is trying to force the culture to move towards a more digital aspect and out of traditional modern art. This piece of work should help to move our culture forward into the digital age and leave behind the ideas of modern values of paintings and other traditional forms of art.
